Grand Bassa University Formerly Grand Bassa Community College is the first Chartered and Accredited Higher Educational Institution established in Grand Bassa County to grant associate degrees since the county was founded in 1832 nearly 180 years ago. The action to begin a college was prompted by the advocacy of the determined youths who paraded the streets of Buchanan in demand of a Higher Educational Institution to be established in the County. In response, the Legislators and the County Leadership provided an initial amount of US$400,000.00 from the County Social Development Fund to establish the college. Thereafter the college has been playing the role of providing equal access to quality education for all residents, regardless of race, ethnicity, color, creed, gender, religious, or political affiliation. However, this indicated that Liberia in the 21century needs Higher Education Institutions to ensure effective and efficient delivery of quality education for residents and citizens. Despite the socio-economic trend and political will, the nation building and workforce development is tied in the mandate of tertiary institutions with elevated academic programs to guarantee work performance and create competence at the highest level to enrich and enhance the individuals to succeed. Today the college is providing sources of expertise and vocational identity, business and industrial services for residents and citizens. Contingent upon this worthy performance over the decade, of four successive graduations, the Grand Bassa Community College is now keen on undergrad (baccalaureate) degree program to enhance well-meaning individuals capable of impacting communities dedicated to the learning and personal developments of students. However, the optimism and spirit to launch a Bachelor's degree program is high amongst the citizens and residents in and around the environment to certain extent that students from Grand Bassa attending other Higher Institutions are rethinking to return to the county once the Bachelor Program kick-start operation. The quest for Higher Education in the region has intensified due to the economic hardship and the political drive of institutional development each county is seeking taking into consideration the impact and socio-economic boost in other regions. The Grand Bassa Community College will focus on providing cutting-edge and innovative courses designed to meet students’ career needs. In addition, The College offers Programs of Study for those who desire the traditional four-year baccalaureate degree, accelerated National Diploma completion programs for working adults, and certificates and diplomas for working professionals. The College’s academically qualified faculty has relevant training and teaching experience and is committed to providing an excellent, teacher, business, public and nursing education through the primacy of teaching, offering small class sizes, and building student-faculty relationships that foster the student’s academic and professional growth.
